Ground Support Cable Bolts
Cable bolts are used to provide strength and stability in large underground excavations. They provide excellent load transfer and maximum flexibility. Their unique characteristics provide ultimate safety and reliability in varied geological conditions and complex underground environments.

- Cable bolts are made from multi-strand steel cables, 15–22 mm in diameter, offering high tensile strength to support large rock masses and long spans.
- Available in lengths up to 12 m, allowing reinforcement well beyond the excavation perimeter - ideal for large openings, intersections, and ore drives.
- The cable’s flexible construction allows easy installation in irregular or curved boreholes where rigid bolts can’t be used effectively.
- Can be fully grouted (using cement or resin) or point anchored depending on ground conditions and design requirements.
- Designed to distribute load evenly over long distances, reducing stress concentrations and enhancing stability in jointed or fractured ground.
- Typically used in conjunction with bearing plates, domed washers, and mesh for comprehensive ground control coverage.
Installation
Cable bolts are installed into a pre-drilled hole through a variety of manual or mechanized installation methods. The anchor is bonded into the rock mass by an encapsulating grout or resin. For manual installations, a retaining hook is included at the end of the cable to hold the anchor in place while the resin or grout cures.
Plain strand cable bolts in single or twin-strand configurations are typically installed in 48 mm or 64 mm diameter holes. Bulbed cables in single or twin-strand configurations, typically with 28 mm bulbs, are installed in a minimum 51 mm holes.
Where pre-tensioning of the installed cable is required, BDDrill offers a range of barrel and wedge assemblies.
